Source correlation of biomarkers in a mangrove ecosystem on Santa Catarina Island in southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Silva,Cesar A.; Madureira,Luiz A.S..
The relative distribution of several compounds identified in four samples of recently deposited sediments of the Itacorubi Mangrove located on the Santa Catarina Island, southern Brazil, was compared with similar data on compounds extracted from fresh leaves of three mangrove species (Avicennia schaueriana, the dominant species in the area, Rhizophora mangle and Laguncularia racemosa) and the Gramineae Spartinna alterniflora. Terpenols, previously identified in mangrove species in northern Brazil, were also found. A. schaueriana mainly contains β-amyrin (90.6 μg g-1 of extractable organic matter); low amounts of friedelin, betulin and germanicol were detected only in the leaf extract of this species. R. mangle also contained a significant amount of...

Spatial and temporal variations in trace metal concentrations in surface sediments of the Marennes Oleron Bay. Relation to hydrodynamic forcing ArchiMer
Strady, Emilie; Kervella, Stephane; Blanc, Gerard; Robert, Serge; Stanisiere, Jean-yves; Coynel, Alexandra; Schaefer, Joerg.
Sediments quality assessment is of priority concern to provide a comprehensible overview of ecological and chemical state of an ecosystem. The Marennes-Oleron Bay, hosting the largest oyster production in France, is influenced by the historic polymetallic pollution of the Gironde Estuary. Despite, management efforts and decreasing emissions in the Gironde watershed, Cd levels in oysters from the bay are close to consumption limit (5 pig g(-1) dw. EC no. 466/2001). In this context, the aim of the study was to assess the priority metal (Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Ag, Cd, Hg, Pb and Th) concentrations in sediment within the Bay, by investigating spatial and temporal distribution variations and the role of hydrodynamic forcing. For that we selected three sites (east,...

Spatial distribution of organic matter in the surface sediments of Ubatuba Bay (Southeastern - Brazil) Anais da ABC (AABC)
BURONE,LETICIA; MUNIZ,PABLO; PIRES-VANIN,ANA MARIA S.; RODRIGUES,MARCELO.
Analyses of organic matter content, organic carbon, nitrogen, sulfur and granulometric variables were performed on 101 surface sediment samples from Ubatuba Bay in order to investigate the spatial distribution of organic matter, its origin and the relationships among its components. The samples were obtained with a manual corer, from water depths between 1 and 15m during 5 cruises of the R/V "Veliger II'', two months apart. Pearson correlation, regression and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) statistical methods were used to analyze the data. Strong correlations between organic matter and fine sediment fractions were obtained. The PCA revealed at least two main sample groups that reflect the different environmental conditions prevalent in the bay. There...

Spatio-temporal variability in benthic silica cycling in two macrotidal estuaries: Causes and consequences for local to global studies ArchiMer
Raimonet, Melanie; Ragueneau, Olivier; Andrieux Loyer, Francoise; Philippon, Xavier; Kerouel, Roger; Le Goff, Manon; Memery, Laurent.
The high heterogeneity of silica cycling in coastal margins and the lack of silica data (compared to nitrogen and phosphorus) prevent the estimation of global silica retention in estuaries. In this study, the spatial and temporal variability of porewater silicic acid (Si(OH)4) profiles e that integrate benthic transport and reaction processes e was investigated at different spatial (metre, longitudinal and crosssection, intra-estuary) and temporal (tidal, seasonal) scales in two macrotidal estuaries, very close geographically but essentially differing in their shape. Studying the spatial and temporal variability of Si(OH)4 concentrations in porewaters provided evidence for the importance of transport processes, e.g. bio-irrigation, tidal pumping,...

Spatio-temporal variations in intertidal mudflat erodability: Marennes-Oleron Bay, western France ArchiMer
Orvain, Francis; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Le Hir, Pierre; Guillou, Gael; Cann, Philippe; Paillard, Michel.
A portable erosion device (ERIS) was deployed in November 2000 and May 2001 to investigate the spatio-temporal variation of fine-grained sediment erosion over a transect on the intertidal mudflats of Marennes-Oleron Bay, western France. The objective was to relate changes in bed erodability over diurnal emersion periods to bioturbation, rapid changes in sediment characteristics, and microphytobenthos biomass. Macrofaunal assemblages were dominated by the bivalve, Scrobicularia plana, on the upper mudflat, and by the gastropod, Hydrobia ulvae. on the middle mudflat. A power relationship was obtained where tau(cr) was plotted as a function of sediment density. Results from the upper part of the mudflat deviated from this relationship due to bioturbation by...

Spring-arm core doser (SACC) ArchiMer
Hartwig, Eo.
A spring-arm core doser (SACC) is described which does not disturb the sediment and is highly reliable. SA CC is designed to replace core catchers, baIl seals and other types of core retainers which disturb the sediments. SACC can be used on cores with a stationary, rigid outer frame. Additionally, SACC can accommodate various diameter core tubes. When attached to a disturbance free corer, SACC permits the retrieval of large diameter cores suit able for diagenetic, nutrient ex change and sediment-water interface studies.

Subseafloor archaeal communities: from the surface to a deep hot biosphere? ArchiMer
Roussel, Erwan.
The sub-seafloor biosphere may contain two thirds of Earth's total prokaryotic biomass. The large and active microbial populations buried in the sub-seafloor play a key role in global biogeochemical cycles. However, little is known about these prokaryotic communities. The depth limit of this sub-seafloor biosphere is still unreached, and elevated temperatures as well as insufficient energy sources are the likely factors limiting life at depth. Interestingly, archaeal communities with unknown physiologies and no cultured relatives seem to have a key role in deep marine sediments and hydrothermal ecosystems. As most deep biosphere microorganisms detected so far have been extremely resistant to cultivation, molecular approaches remain to date the most...

Successful detection of pathogenic Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli in shellfish, environmental waters and sediment using the ISO/TS-13136 method ArchiMer
Baliere, Charlotte; Rince, Alain; Thevenot, Delphine; Gourmelon, Michele.
The presence of highly pathogenic Shiga-toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) in shellfish, upstream waters and sediment from coastal shellfish sites was evaluated using the ISO/TS-13136 method. Shellfish (oysters, mussels and cockles), water and sediment samples were collected monthly over a period of 1 year. The method used real-time PCR detection of stx1, stx2 and eae genes and genetic markers corresponding to the five major serogroups (O157, O26, O103, O111 and O145) on enrichment broths and the identification of STEC when these genes and markers were detected. stx genes were detected in the broth of 33% of shellfish batches (n = 126), 91% of water samples (n = 117) and 28% of sediment (n = 39). One stx1+, eae+ O26:H11 strain was isolated from a...

Summer mortality of Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) in relation to environmental rearing conditions ArchiMer
Soletchnik, Patrick; Lambert, Christian; Costil, Katherine.
The purpose of this study is to investigate summer mortality of the cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas, in relation to culture practices in the traditional oyster production region of Marennes-Oleron (France). Four oyster rearing conditions, varying culture location ("on-" or "off-bottom"), and site depth (65% to 80% daily immersion termed "deep" or 45% to 65%, termed "shallow") were studied to compare biologic performance and maturation status of oysters, in relation to sediment and water column parameters. The most severe mortality occurred in June to July in "on-bottom" reared oysters (25%), as compared with 10% mortality in "off-bottom" cultured oysters. Oysters (shell and meat) grew significantly better when reared "off-bottom" than "on-bottom."...

The biogeochemistry of mercury at the sediment water interface in the Thau lagoon. 1. Partition and speciation ArchiMer
Muresan Paslaru, Bogdan; Cossa, Daniel; Jezequel, D; Prevot, F; Kerbellec, S.
Solid sediment, pore and epibenthic waters were collected from the Thau lagoon (France) in order to study the post depositional partition and mobility of mercury and monomethylmercury in an organic rich sediment. Total Hg (HgT) and monomethymercury (MMHg) profiles were produced in both dissolved and solid phases. The distribution of HgT in the solid appeared to be related to the historical changes in the Hg inputs into the lagoon. HgT was in equilibrium between solid and solution in the sulfidic part of the cores, with a mean log Kd of 4.9 +- 0.2. The solid appeared to be a source of HgT for pore water in the upper oxic to suboxic parts of the cores. The MMHg represented a small fraction of HgT: 3-15 % and 0.02-0.80 % in the dissolved and in the solid...

The influence of sediment cohesiveness on bioturbation effects due to Hydrobia ulvae on the initial erosion of intertidal sediments: A study combining flume and model approaches ArchiMer
Orvain, F; Sauriau, Pierre-guy; Bacher, Cedric; Prineau, Michel.
Laboratory experiments performed in a recirculating flume were designed to quantify the bioturbation influence of the mud snail Hydrobia ulvae, one of the most abundant deposit feeders on European intertidal mudflats. Variations in sediment moisture content that occur between bedforms in shore-normal, ridge and runnel systems of intertidal mudflats were added to the model definition. Sediment erosion thresholds, erosion rates and the microalgal pigment composition of resuspended material were quantified for different H. ulvae densities (0, 1000, 5000, 10 000 and 50 000 snails m(-2)) and applied bed shear stresses. Two different sediment moisture contents were tested. In the absence of macrofauna, recorded turbidities increased up to the maximum applied...

The intra-annual variability of soft-bottom macrobenthos abundance patterns in the North Channel of the Seine estuary ArchiMer
Desroy, Nicolas; Janson, Anne-laure; Denis, Lionel; Charrier, Gregory; Lesourd, Sandric; Dauvin, Jean-claude.
Temporal and spatial variability of the Abra alba–Pectinaria koreni and Macoma balthica communities was examined in the northern part of the Seine estuary (North Channel) over different space and time scales in order to assess the role that the hydrologic regime and/or anthropogenic influences play in defining benthic communities over time. Sediment in the North Channel displayed strong spatial and temporal variability, sustained by intense sediment transport episodes. Total macrobenthic abundances ranged widely on the course of the year and there was no evidence of a seasonal signal for the density fluctuations, whatever the spatial scale considered. The bio-sedimentary dynamics can be divided into two periods: the first corresponds to the high flow rate...

The meiofauna: macrofauna ratio across the continental slope of the Goban Spur (north-east Atlantic) OMA
Flach, E.; Vanaverbeke, J.; Heip, C.H.R..
Meio- and macrofauna density and biomass were estimated at the OMEX-transect across the continental slope of the Goban Spur at water depths ranging from 208 to 4460 m in the north-east Atlantic. A linear increase in the ratio between meio- and macrofauna densities with increasing water depth was found. At the continental shelf meiofauna densities were similar to 50 times higher than macrofauna densities, whereas in the abyss meiofauna densities were more than 1000 times higher. This change in ratio was due to a significant decrease in macrofauna densities with increasing water depth, whereas the meiofauna densities staved more or less at the same level. The ratio in biomass between meio- and macrofauna showed a dip at similar to 1000 m. At this depth...

The provenance of sediments in the Gulf of Lions, western Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Revillon, Sidonie; Jouet, Gwenael; Bayon, Germain; Rabineau, Marina; Dennielou, Bernard; Hemond, Christophe; Berne, Serge.
In this study, we undertook a reconnaissance study of sediments provenance in the Gulf of Lions focusing over the last 16 ka. We used geochemical and isotopic tracers to determine the source of sediments and give insight into the weathering conditions prevailing. Sediments samples were selected both onshore and offshore from the western, eastern, and central part of the Gulf of Lions. We analyzed bulk sediments, coarse and fine silt, and clay fractions. Elemental and Nd isotope compositions appeared to differ from one grain size fraction to another one. These are interpreted in terms of zircon addition in the coarse silt fraction for the elemental concentrations and variable sources influences for the Nd isotope compositions. Our results indicate that...

Trace metals assessment in water, sediment, mussel and seagrass species - Validation of the use of Posidonia oceanica as a metal biomonitor ArchiMer
Lafabrie, Céline; Pergent, G; Kantin, Roger; Pergent Martini, C; Gonzalez, Jean-louis.
The accumulation of trace metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Hg, Ni and Pb) was measured in water, sediment, the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the seagrass Posidonia oceanica. Samples were collected in three locations of the north-western Mediterranean (Canari, Livorno and Porto-Torres) which present different levels and sources of human impact. Analyses in the different compartments (water, sediment, M. galloprovincialis and P. oceanica) have allowed to identify Canari as the most Cd, Co, Cr and Ni contaminated site; Livorno as the most Hg contaminated and Porto-Torres as the most Pb contaminated. Furthermore, for the first time, metal concentrations found in P. oceanica have been compared with those found in the water column, in the sediment and in the...

Use of the burrowing amphipod Tiburonella viscana as a tool in marine sediments contamination assessment BABT
Abessa,Denis M.S.; Sousa,Eduinety C.P.M.; Rachid,Bauer R.F.; Mastroti,Ricardo R..
The acute toxicity of sediment samples from Santos Estuary was evaluated by using sediment toxicity tests with the burrowing amphipod Tiburonella viscana. Survival of amphipods acclimated for 2 and 15 days was also analyzed. The sensitivity of this species was evaluated by 48h-exposure tests using potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) as a reference substance. The sediment samples from Gonzaga Beach, Prainha and Paranapuã Beach were not toxic to T. viscana, whereas the samples collected at Santos Channel and São Vicente Bay were toxic. The acclimation period did not affect survival significantly, in spite of the higher mortality within the 15-day acclimated group. The estimated 48-h LC50 to K2Cr2O7 was 6.029 mg/L (3.27-11.12). Using geochronology to reconstruct the evolution of particulate phosphorus inputs during the past century in the Papeete Lagoon (French Polynesia) ArchiMer
Harris, Pierre; Fichez, Renaud; Fernandez, Jean Michel; Golterman, Han; Badie, Christian.
During the past century, the sediment deposition rate has been assessed by measuring excess Pb-210 activity in a sediment core sampled in the harbour area of the Papeete Lagoon (Tahiti, French Polynesia). Dated sediment samples were analysed following a sequential extraction method to quantify five sedimentary phosphorus pools: loosely sorbed or exchangeable phosphorus, ferric iron-bound phosphorus, authigenic calcium carbonate associated phosphorus, detrital apatite and detritic inorganic phosphorus, acid organic phosphorus. Results from sediment dating showed the core to cover the period from 1865 to 1995, with a sharp change around 1957 corresponding to a doubling in sediment deposition rates. From the bottom to the top of the core, concentrations...
